Villa Bianchi
Price: From £970
Located near Jesi, Marche, Italy
Hilltop villa perched above surrounding vineyards, sleeping up to 8 guests, with small dipping pool (4x2m)
Ample lawned gardens dotted with mature trees surround Villa Bianchi, a traditional country redsidence carefully restored and tastefully furnished.
Set on a hill surrounded below by slopes of Verdicchio vines owned by historic Marche winemaker Umani Ronchi, the property is immersed in the history of winemaking in Marche. Wine tasting events can be arranged for guests of the property at the Umani Ronchi distillery near Osimo.
The villa is only 10 miles from the breathtaking Frasassi Caves, a series of internationally important and evocative limestone underground caverns, believed to be the largest of their kind in Europe.
Also in the vicinity is a group of hilltop towns including Castelbellino, Monte Roberto, Maiolati Spontini and Cupramontana, known as the Castelli di Jese. They are blessed with an abundance of ancient architecture, churches, museums, castles, theatres and wonderful restaurants and trattorias, a couple within walking distance of Villa Bianchi.
A simple drive allows guests of the villa to bathe along the many Adriatic beaches, making the coast perfect for day trips to the sandy beaches of Senigallia or the breathtaking Conero Riviera, with its stunning sea cliffs and secluded little coves.
The Conero area is a protected nature reserve of regional importance, partly due to its unique geography and rare flora and fauna. Part of the reserve includes a 2,000 ft mountain which rises up directly from the beaches below and is visible for dozens of miles in every direction.
All sorts of activities are possible in the park including mountain biking, walking, trekking and horse riding. All provide the perfect opportunity to enjoy the stunning views and witness the wildlife of the area (roe deer, porcupines, red squirrels, wild boar, owls and falcons to name but a few).
Once back from a day trip or visit to the beach why not enjoy Villa Bianchi's private dipping pool, complete with hydro-massage, the perfect way to soothe away the aches and pains after a day out.
One of many interesting towns suitable for a day trip is Urbino, home to an ancient university and steeped in history and the birthplace of some renowned artists. Today the town is an important centre for painting and many of the region's local artists are drawn to the town to live and work.
Some of the Urbino's varied architecture helps explain the attraction and the town's unique heritage is reflected in its UNESCO World Heritage Site status, confirming its international importance as a cultural and historical centre.
Architectural gems include the Palazzo Ducale, the most important building of its kind in Italy, and the object of numerous copies across the country.
To the south of Villa Bianchi is the university town and provincial capital Macerata, home to an open air opera festival held every summer in July and August at the Sferisterio, an outdoor amphitheatre second in operatic importance only to the Arena in Verona.
