Casa La Quercia

Price: From £320

Located near Santa Vittoria, Marche, Italy

Rustic stone villa sleeping a total of 12 guests in four inter-communicating apartments, with private swimming pool.

Only the sounds of nature will disturb you at this traditional Marche villa - peace and tranquility, rest and relaxation are the themes at this delightful spot, tucked away in the green and gently rollling hills in the Ascoli Piceno province of Marche.

Casa La Quercia is located close to the medieval hilltop towns of Santa Vittoria and Montelparo, which have a select offering of restaurants and bars.

Two miles away is La Ginestra Country House Hotel, frmo whose grounds horse treks and riding tuition are organised, as well as tennis lessons on one of its four tennis courts, restaurant and bar.

Also close by is the village of Montottone, home of the famous family-run Bozzi Pottery, with a dazzling array of unusual handmade pots and crockery made to ancient designs.

Montelparo also has a very interesting rural museum with all sorts of wierd and wonderful farming contraptions and domestic machines and artefacts from yesteryear, conjuring up wonderful images of life in these towns and valleys from the days before the intrusion of the motor car.

Some other towns close by includef Fermo, Offida, Ascoli Piceno and Amandola. All unique and interesting and awash with history. The provincial capital of Fermo with its dominant cathedral at the top of the town overlooing Marche and boasting views from the coast to the Apennines. Here you can also find an important art gallery which has one of the few paintings by Rubens in Italy and a unique medieval library filled with pigskin parchments and books, and a fascinating enormous medieval globe of the world made by cartographers and explorers from the days when most of the world still remained a mystery to Europeans.

Ascoli Piceno's central piazza made entirely of tramentine marble is a must visit and Offida's lace-making traditions still practised in summer months by the ladies of the town sitting out in the sun give it a unique atmosphere. And Amandola, the gateway to the mountains with its amazing views and porticoed piazza, is another gem to be enjoyed at all costs.

An abundance of other historic hilltop towns are also close by, many with their own town festivals and sagras and the Adriatic Coast is an easy drive away.
