A wonderfully restored cottage set in its own grounds, Casa dei Fiori is a lovely property in a location to match.

Its unusual split-level construction is endearing, entering through the original farmhouse kitchen and descending the stairs to a lovely living area and modern kitchen with patio doors out into the pretty garden below, spoilt with stunning views over the Apennines. Guests invariably eat outdoors under the gazebo to take advantage of the picturesque scenery.

For those who manage to tear themselves away from the garden and house the local area is full of interest. Matelica and Fabriano are within easy drive and both merit a visit.

Matelica is an important centre for the production of Verdicchio, one of Marche's best known wines. Also worthy of note is the fifteenth century belltower of the town's cathedral and Piazza Mattei, which is surrounded by the town's most important historical buildings.

Even for those who have never visited Fabriano the chances are that Fabriano has visited them - its fine papers are exported all over the world and still extensively used for banknotes. It is part of a proud history of paper-making which dates back to the fourteenth century, when the little town was already producing more than a million sheets a year. It is also the place where watermarked paper was invented.
